CelebMix spoke with Piero Pirupa to discover how he got started in music, what inspires his music, and his writing process.
What three things can’t you live without?
Music, Food, and Travel.
What inspired your new single, “Asereje?”
The original song was a big hit many years ago and when I got the idea from Paolo Pellegrino, I was so excited to jump into the project.
How did you come to collaborate with Paolo Pellegrino?
Paolo came to me with the idea. I immediately said yes because I thought the vocal had huge potential, so it was very easy to build on the track! I’m very excited about this release and I really like this collaboration with him.
How did you get started in music?
I started many years ago… the end of the ‘90s, early 2000s. I was very young, I started working as a promoter of some parties in my area and then jumped into DJing a few years later because of my love of electronic music.
Where are you from?
I’m from Teramo, a small town in the center of Italy, Is a nice city, we got mountains and the sea in 30 mins by car. Is a beautiful place to stay…when you need peace and want to charge batteries.
Did your hometown impact your sound?
Not at all, I traveled a lot when I started DJing, went many times to Ibiza, London, Berlin, Miami, and NYC to listen to the best DJs in the world like Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, Erick Morillo, and Roger Sanchez to name a few.
If you had to describe your sound to the uninitiated, what would you say?
As a producer, lately, everyone knows me for my tech house releases, but as a DJ I love to play a little bit of everything, Let’s say I’m modern techno house music.
What inspires your writing? Do you draw inspiration from poems, music, or other media?
Music from the past inspires me a lot, I was very influenced by disco music, punk rock, electro from the ‘80s, and dance from the ‘90s. I’m always looking for inspiration from those days.
What can you share about your writing process?
My writing process is very simple, if I’ve got a nice idea I’ll go to the studio, otherwise, I do something else! I’m joking lol. In the last few years, I’ve used so many samples in my Trax so it happened that every time I’ve got the right sample I jump to the studio or laptop and work on it. When I want to do an original idea with vocalists, I first prepare the instrumental and then I’ll look for some good vocalists that could fit into it; once I find the right vocal then I’ll finalize the track. My process is very simple and fast.
Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?
There are some that I’m really loving right now but these are my three favs: Joshwa, Bruno Furlan, and Jengi.
How do you define success?
Success is when you set goals and bring them to achievement. Take pen and paper, write down all the labels, venues, and festivals where you want to work, and make it happen in a few years.
Looking back over the last few years, what have you learned?
You must never stop, never relax, always be focused on your goals, always work and above all never give up because if you believe in what you do you will get there!
What can your fans look forward to over the next six months? Live gigs? Music videos?
Yes, many new releases are incoming on my label NONSTOP, Edible, Catch & Release, Solotoko, Spinnin, and others. I’ll be touring in the US and Europe a lot in the next few months and can’t wait for the summer season.
